• A rack gear works with a partner gear to convert rotational motion into linear motion.
• The partner gear is called the pinion, is attached to a motor powered or hand powered shaft. Pinion’s rotational motion moves the rack linearly.  
• The reverse is possible when power is applied to the rack and causes rotational motion of the pinion.
